SMOKE'D

You’d have to be living under a pretty big rock if you hadn’t noticed the trend of smoked BBQ meat going around at the moment. Instagram algorithms and food shows all over the place are packed with hard core BBQ-ers trying to out-do each other with juicy, pull-apart meats and super saucy sauces.

But you don’t need to be hard core to get all up in it. You just have to go to SMOKE’D. The smash burger and pork belly burger are both awesome, and the 12 hour smoked brisket burger is up there with the best.  

And yes, we know this is a burger blog, but they have heaps of other gre at meat and other things like tacos…which are kinda like a burger. Don’t come at us

Burger Liquor

Burger Liquor is one of the O.G’s of Wellington’s burger resurgence of recent times. It was the city’s first burger bar, with (of course) great burgers alongside cocktails, beers, hard shakes and a selection of spirits. Not to mention snacks, fries and out-the–gate desserts.

This is about quality over quantity. The Smokey is famous around the world, with beef, smoked bacon, smokey BBQ sauce, buttermilk onion strings (!!!), cheddar and mayo.

Housemade sauces elevate everything they touch and the whole setup is just done right. They can even tweak their burgers to cater for certain allergies, which is dead set legend status.

The Tasting Room 

The Tasting Room is a great bar and restaurant that’s been a mainstay of Courtenay Place for, like, ages. It’s a great spot for a drink and a meal, but now they do delivery too. Or rather, they don’t deliver, but we do it for them. Cos we’re mates.

The menu here is really well rounded, but since you came here looking for burgers, that’s what we’re gonna talk about. And these are the goods. 

They’ve got an awesome classic beef burger, a nicely spicy buttermilk chicken burger, a fish burger, a pulled pork burger and a veeeeery nice eggplant parma burger for you veggies out there. Run, don’t walk.

LUCKY

LUCKY is an institution for chicken lovers. These guys and girls are deep frying gurus, and the result is fried chicken excellence. And that’s a pretty awesome result in our books.

The fried chicken burgers are some of the best going around. But that’s not all - they have fried halloumi burgers, and even fried chicken AND halloumi burgers. Throw in options like hotdogs, chicken poppers and some must-have crinkle cut fries with gravy, and it’s the whole shebang.

LUCKY has its original Courtenay Place spot and also a Press Hall outlet, so you can get ya chicken all over town. 

Re Burger

All the best burgers have character, and Re Burger has it in spades. They’re in your face in more ways than one, with big flavours and bigger burgers. 

Their beef burgers range from the classic cheeseburgers to ones with bacon, caramelised onion, crunchy onion rings and even a fried egg. The chicken burgers can come glazed with honey sriracha or buffalo sauce, with options including grilled pineapple or streaky bacon. 

Re Burger’s loaded fries are filthy in the best way possible, they have some serious sides, great veggie options and sauces to die for. It’s everything you want in a burger, and absolutely nothing less. 

Choice Bros

It’s not often you come across a burger spot that says it all in the name. Choice Bros is yet another specialist fried chicken joint, and this one is available exclusively through Delivereasy.

Get your chicken in a combination of white or brown meat (that’s breast and wing), flavoured either with Nashville-style hot and numbing, or crispy fried with manuka butter.
